about this recording:
What is so special about the pieces on this CD is the retuning of the violoncello which was common in the 17th century in Italy but has been discarded since then. This kind of retuning was used even more extremely in the violin works of that period (Biber, Lonati et al., see also CCD 211). J.S. Bach also recommends this "scordato" to make certain chords sound more beautifully. So this CD presents works some of which have not been recorded so far; yet by their special sound appeal, by the sonorous tone of the instruments used here, as well as by Gerhart Darmstadt's very personal interpretation they do represent a very valuable enrichment of the discography for violoncello.

reviews:
“An exemplary recording ... Darmstadt and Matzke are highly skilled and sensitive interpreters who manage to present works of the Italians Vitali, Antoni and Gabrieli - the earliest examples in the genre for violoncello - absolutely convincingly in respect to their improvisatorial attitude. ... The purchase of this CD is highly recommended to any cellist.” (alte musik aktuell 7/8 '93)
