The arresting nature and the bold expression and
wild fantasy of the works by Dan Dediu is astounding. Dediu distrusts
the dogmas of the Western avant-garde without ignoring its achievements.
For him, musical composition is a matter of playfulness and erudition
alike. He writes fugues and toccatas, works with complex rhythmic
patterns, quarter-tones and new timbres. However, his language is always
characterized by an improvisatory spontaneity and expressiveness seldom
heard in the West under the dictatorship of musical dogma. As if
something of the vital Romanian musical tradition, of the folk legacy of
the peasants and of Byzantine church music had won through.
