about this recording:
Felix Mendelssohn was able to draw upon a truly inexhaustible source of poetry and literature in his immediate surroundings, since the most famous personalities of the German Romantic movement frequented the Berlin home of the Mendelssohn family. With his so self-assured and naturally flowing music, Mendelssohn magnified the poems he chose, sometimes to the point of dramatic, violent outbursts, as in the Hexenlied (Witches' Song). Barbara Schlick captures the spirit of these songs, from the most lyrical of passages to the demonic eruptions, while Elzbieta Kalvelage paints the background for the moods with colors that only a hammerklavier can provide. Not your commonplace Mendelssohn-Year production.
