"The art song duet, a composition for two performers with or without accompaniment,
has its roots in medieval music, in ornate two-voiced tropes and conducti of the thirteenth
century most likely sung by soloists, in sections of mass settings, motets, madrigals,
canzonets of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and in the didactic two-part bicini
of the sixteenth century. Since then composers have consistently created a wide variety
of vocal duets which may be chamber pieces, parts of operas or larger sacred works. The
vocal material is typically evenly shared between the duettists. But while in some duets
both vocalists sing the same text, in others the singers present different texts in a dialogue
or dramatic form. This program explores a broad range of duets for soprano, baritone
and piano featuring European and American composers from the eighteenth through the

Carole FitzPatrick received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and two Master’s degrees from Yale, then moved to Europe in 1988. Her concert work has been extensive, including concert tours in France and Spain, and performances in Finland, Austria, Holland, the Czech Republic, Luxemburg, and Russia.

Baritone Robert Barefield has performed as soloist with organizations throughout the United States and in Europe, including the New Orleans Opera, the Mississippi Symphony, the Arizona Opera, the Dorian Opera Theatre, the Central City Opera, the Ohio Light Opera and Operafestival di Roma in Italy.

Eckart Sellheim maintains an active performance schedule, having made concert tours in the
USA, Latin America and the Carribean, the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Europe. He appears regularly on radio programs in the USA and abroad and has made more than 20 recordings as piano and fortepiano soloist and collaborative pianist.
