The Concerto for large Orchestra, dating from the young days of a composer who already at the age of eighteen was able to experience the performance of his works by such capacities as Fritz Busch and Wilhelm Furtwängler in Dresden, Berlin, and Venice, is contrasted on this CD with the serene Dürer Symphony of the nearly fifty-year-old, who feels bound to harmonic traditions and polyphonic compositional techniques. Two recordings, which are lent mellowness and power by the Bamberger Symphoniker under Peter Gülke and Jan Koetsier, raise this music above the fashionable trends of the age.
