Seldom has one heard Mendelssohn’s “small” Violin concerto so touchingly played as by Friedemann Wetzel, who takes advantage here of all the freedoms of true Sturm and Drang music. In the famous Octet, too, Friedemann Wetzel – experienced as a longstanding member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra – leads his ensemble with a steady hand through the complicated terrain of Mendelssohn’s brilliant early work.
