The concertos by Johan Joachim Agrell, some of which are recorded here for the first time, are distinguished by the elegance of their solo parts. This is eighteenth-century popular music in the best sense of the word. The Swedish-born and -trained composer lived for almost twenty years as chapel-master and composer in Nuremberg, where he was also active as choir director of the Frauenkirche.
Wilbert Hazelzet and Matthew Halls, together with the fantastic ensemble “Music for Awhile,” play with captivating fressness, almost as if they had just emerged from the eighteenth century.
